It is critical to the health and survival of the new
borns that they receive adequate colostrum . If the dam dies
or is without colostrum then a substitute colostrum must be
used.
To be effective the amount of colostrum provided to the
kid must be sufficient. It must also be given shortly after
birth
Although the 'exact' amount of time the kid can absorb
the antibodies from the colostrum is not know for sure it is
suspected that an adequate amount of colostrum needs to been
given to the kid within the first twelve hours after birth.
An effective choice for colostrum replacement is:
10-15 cc IMMUNO-G
mixed with
15cc REBOUND
This mix is given to the kids at least THREE times in the
first 12 hours of life. Personally we continue to give the
Immuno-G and Rebound for the first 24 hours since it is not
known FOR SURE just how long the antibodies are absorbed
through the gut.
*****************************
We use these products at TRI-QUEST and have since the
early 1990's when we field tested these products on 80 half
blood boer doe and buck kids with 100% successful
results.
Because it is important that the new born kid consumes
it's full portion of the IMMUNO-G and REBOUND we mix these
two product with just enough milk, milk replacer or warm
water to allow the kid to suck them through the nipple. If
the kid is still aggressively wanting to nurse after
consuming its portion of 'colostrum replacer' we then allow
it to drink the balance of its milk or milk replacer
portion.
The 'colostrum replacer' is fed again at the next
scheduled feeding and is given a minimum of three times in
the first twelve hours after birth.
We continue giving the REBOUND at the rate of 10cc 3x a
day for the next couple of days and then at the rate of 5cc
3x a day for the next day or two.
Please Remember: HOMEMADE 'colostrum substitutes'
containing sugars, syrups, oils and raw eggs do not contain
passive IgG's and therefore DO NOT support the immune
system. Furthermore, the feeding of raw eggs gives rise to
the possibility of salmonella infection, which can be DEADLY
to the newborn.
Personal
Note
Think of Colostrum as a TWO PART PRODUCT, the
first being the IgG's, which the Immuno - G provides and the
second Calories / Energy, which the Rebound provides.
Because the Rebound in a very bio-available FOOD source
it is wonderful to use on any sick or debilitated animal. It
has proven to be especially good to use in providing
supportive care to goats that have gotten down with anemia
from heavy parasite loads.
ONE 250 cc bottle or Immuno -G along with ONE quart of
Rebound will supplement five kids.
Personally, we like to continue to give the Rebound for
six days.
15cc in each bottle four times a day for days 1
and 2
10 cc in each bottle four times a day for days 3
and 4
5cc in each bottle four times a day for days 5
and 6
After day six, unless there are unusual circumstances, we
discontinue the Rebound in the milk or milk replacer.
Feeding this 'extra' amount of Rebound will mean that the
quart of Rebound will cover only FOUR kids.
